Romanian minister of national defense
Born in Drobeta Turnu Severin, on May 10, 1970, Mihai-Viorel Fifor attended pre-university schools in his native city, entering the University of Craiova in 1989. He graduated in 1994 the History and Literature College. The same institution awarded him a master's degree in Romanian literature the following year, and a Ph.D in Social Anthropology (MAGNA CUM LAUDE), in 2003.
Since 2003, he holds a master’s degree in the management of the public institution from the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest and in 2009 he completed Internal Affairs Management courses of the National College of Internal Affairs and the Security and Good Governance courses of the National Defence College, both in Bucharest.
From 1994 to 2002, he joined the Romanian Academy’s “C.S. Nicolaescu-Plopșor” Social Studies Research Institute in Craiova, as senior scientific researcher, and from 2001 to 2005 he was scientific researcher and director of the “Dolj” Regional Centre for Conservation and Promotion of Traditional Culture in Craiova. From 2005 to January 2009, and, subsequently, from October 2009 to 2012, he served as general manager of the “Oltenia” Museum in Craiova.
Since 2003, he is associate professor with the Faculty of Letters of University of Craiova.
Political career of Mihai-Viorel Fifor includes positions such as secretary of state in the Ministry of Administration and Interior from January to October 2009 and from May to December 2012, the dignity of senator in the Romanian Parliament which he has been exercising since 2012 as part of the Social-Democrat Party, the position of minister of economy from June to September 2017, and, on 12 September, he was appointed as minister of national defence.
Mihai-Viorel Fifor speaks fluently German, French and English.
