Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania
Mr. Podgorean has been Secretary of State within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania since January 2013. Prior to this, he was Advisor with the Commissioner’s Office, of the National Securities Commission and Advisor with the Foreign Policy Committee of the Romanian Senate. His political career includes the position of Member of the European Parliament since 2007, where he was a Member of the Committee on Petitions and the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development. In 2000, he became a Member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, and he chaired the Foreign Policy Committee until 2004. Between 2004 and 2008, he was a member of the Committee on Culture, Arts and the Media of the Chamber of Deputies. He has been a member of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) since 2000.
Mr. Podgorean was an OSCE observer in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1996, and in 2005, he was the Vice President of the Romanian Group at the Inter-parliamentary Union.
Mr. Podgorean graduated from the Department of Sociology, within Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Bucharest in 1979. Subsequently, he pursued Postgraduate studies in philosophy. After graduation, he worked as a teacher of history and philosophy, researcher and instructor.
